Sri Lanka’s Court of Appeal Monday fixed the order for August 24 in a
petition filed by leading opposition parliamentarians seeking the
court to order the authorities concerned to allow them to visit camps
located in Vavuniyaa where hundreds of thousands of Vanni internally
displaced people are detained by the Sri Lankan military.
Dr.Jayalath Jayewardene and Mr. Lakshman Seneviratne of the main
opposition United National Party (UNP), Mr.Mangala Samaraweera of the
Sri Lanka Freedom Party (rebel group), Mr. Mohamed Hassan Ali of the
Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and Mr.Mano Ganeshan of the
Democratic Peoples Front (DPF) filed the petition. This petition was fixed for inquiry on July 27. When it was taken up
for further inquiry the State Counsel appearing for the Attorney
General made an application to court seeking more time to obtain
necessary instruction from the Attorney General regarding the
petition. Thereafter the Court of Appeal fixed the order in case for
August 24.
