Police launch war against underworld criminals

All police stations in the country have been ordered to arrest leaders of underworld gangs of criminals wanted in connection with abduction, extortion, drug trafficking, murder and other crimes. Meanwhile, Police Headquarters has instructed its senior police officers in Colombo to arrest nine underworld leaders wanted in connection with possession of illegal arms, extortion, drug peddling and other crimes.
Information on their whereabouts has been provided to all police stations in Colombo Police Division. Police sad it believes that crime such as abduction, murder and drug trade could be considerably reduced if these underworld characters are put out of action. A senior police officer said that all the police stations in the country had been ordered to arrest persons wanted for underworld crimes. The DIG CID, DIG in charge of Special Task Force (STF) and DIGs in charge of anti-crime have been appointed to monitor these anti-crime activities. This programme is underway supervised by the Inspector General of Police.
