SLA, police ban rally in Mannaar

Sri Lanka Army and Police Wednesday banned the demonstration and rally organized by the Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies (CHA) in Mannaar demanding the immediate resettlement of internally displaced families detained in camps in Vavuniyaa, lifting all restrictions on travelling and entering hospitals in Vavuniyaa and Mannaar and to find a political solution for the conflict and the removal of restriction on fishing and farming.

Security establishment said state intelligence unit had informed that the rally was an anti-government move, according to pamphlets issued by the organizers.

Hence the decision to ban it, media sources from Mannaar reported.

Large number of SLA soldiers and police personnel were deployed in Mannar town Wednesday to take action against those who disobeyed the ban order. However there was no incident.

CHA earlier had attempted to organize such a rally in Mannaar but could not, sources in Mannaar said.
