Nomination called for Southern PC

Sri Lanka's Commissioner of elections called nomination for elections to the southern province today. The term of the Southern Provincial Council ended yesterday. The Commissioner said in a press note issued this afternoon that nominations have to be filed from April 22 to 29.

Elections to this province are expected in June.

The term of the southern provincial council ended much later than other provinces because it was dismissed in the first year of its office by the Governor of the province due to a crisis over the abduction of a councillor.

The last provincial council elections (excluding the Northeast) were held under the UNP regime in 1993.
