Resettled families in Vanni suffer in unrelenting rain

Vanni uprooted faimiles resettled in haste by the Sri Lanka government without any basic facilities or proper structures have sought refuge under trees as persistent rain, gale and floods had destroyed their temporary tents and tin-roofed shacks, sources in Vanni said. There are no solid buildiings for them to seek shelter in as all of them have been razed to the ground by the Sri Lankan Army during the last phase of the war on Vanni, the sources added.

The families resetteled in some areas in Mannaar, Mullaiththeevu and Ki’linochchi are the people suffering in the onslaught of unrelenting rain.

The temporary tents and shacks constructed with tin sheets for roofing donated by India have been totally destroyed in the rain and ensuing floods.

The government, intent on showing the international community that it is resettling uprooted people from Vanni, had taken them there without making any prior arrangements for them to live in.

As rain continues nonstop the resettled families are seriously considering returning to Vavuniyaa as they are left in the lurch without any assistance from the authorities who took them there, the sources further said.
