Elderly woman knifed to death in Valikaamam

Unknown persons broke into the house of an elderly woman living alone in A’laveddi in Valikaamam Monday midnight inflicted injuries to her chest and neck with sharp objects killing her, sources in Jaffna said. Many elderly persons, forced to live alone in their houses in Jaffna peninsula due to family members being uprooted from their places, fall victims to robbers, the sources added.
The victim was identified as Ms. Ponnuthurai Pakavathi, 77, a resident of Cooperative Lane in A’laveddi. Pakavathi’s neigbhours who noticed her absence around her home Tuesday morning had found her dead inside the house. The motive of the killing is suspected to be robbery. Mallaakam magistrate conducted the inquest into the death at the place of the killing. The victim’s body was handed over to Jaffna Teaching Hospital mortuary Tuesday night. Killings of persons have again escalated in Jaffna peninsula in recent times.
