Colombo relaxes some provisions of Emergency Regulations

The Government of Sri Lanka Tuesday relaxed some provisions of the Emergency Regulations now in force since 12 August 2005. The relaxed provisions are such as holding meetings, imposing curfew, printing certain literature and providing the house holder’s name to the police, according to SL External Affairs Minister G.L.Peiris while speaking in the parliament that began Tuesday two-day debate on the extension of the State of Emergency for another month.

The Prime Minister D.M.Jayaratne moving the motion seeking the emergency extension said the State of Emergency should continue as 'some elements' are seen busy abroad to form a 'new military wing of the LTTE' to seek a separate state and also some 'LTTE proxies' are making preparations to convene their Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam in Switzerland next week.

Meanwhile an unidentified person taking photographs inside the chambers in the parliament Tuesday morning was removed by the security personnel following a complaint lodged with the Speaker Chamal Rajapakse.

The opposition claimed in its allegation that an unidentified person was member of the Presidential Security Division (PSD).However the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) denied the allegation.
