Court grants EPDP restraining order

The EPDP obtained an order from Sri Lanka's Supreme Court preventing Sultan Rahim and Suppaiah Jeganathan from taking oaths as MPs for Jaffna in Parliament today until April 27.

The group moved an application in the supreme court today challenging the validity of the gazette notification by which the Rahim and Jeganathan were appointed MPs for Jaffna.

The bench, Justice Mark Fernando, issued an order restraining the two from taking oaths until the court hears the case after its vacation until April 27.

Rahim and Jeganathan had gone late to Parliament today, missing the appointed time to take their oaths and hence had been asked to come tomorrow.

The EPDP, in the meantime, had obtained the order from the supreme court preventing them from doing so until the courts resume sittings after vacation.

Sri Lanka's Court of Appeal refused yesterday an application made by the EPDP for a stay order restraining Mohammed Sultan Rahim and Suppaiah Jeganathan from taking oaths in Parliament.
