The main opposition United National Party (UNP) Friday decided to
elect its leader by secret ballot in an event where more than
one name is proposed. It states that the same should apply for the
posts of Deputy Leader, Assistant Leader, National Organizer and
Chairman, according to the six -member Reforms Committee report handed
over to the Working Committee of the UNP and approved by the latter.
UNP Chief Organizer Joseph Michael Perera was the head of the Reforms
Committee.
Further discussion and scrutiny on the recommendation would take
place after the Vesak weekend, and the reforms committee report will
be presented to the party membership at the UNP's annual convention in
July, this year. The Working Committee and the Parliamentary Group of the UNP have now
given the go-ahead for the recommendations, UNP Media Spokesman MP
Gayantha Karunatilake said.
