Northern Province Governor, Major Gen. G. A. Chandrasiri has directed Jaffna Assistant Commissioner of Local Government (ACLG) to collect the details of assistance given to each person resettled in Jaffna district, accusing the local Non-government Organizations (NGOs) and humanitarian agencies which had provided assistance to the uprooted families of malpractice, sources in Jaffna said. Governor’s accusation against the NGOs and his directive to collect detailed information of the assistance provided by them is the first step to bring the NGOs under government’s control, NGO circles complained.
The local NGOs and human agencies in Jaffna district had helped the resettled families independently, depending on the needs of the families, and not under the administration of Jaffna government secretariat. In reality, Sri Lanka Government had not spent anything for the resettled families. The initial payment of 5,000 rupees had been given with UNHCR funds and the second payment of 25,000 rupees with funds from World Bank and Asian Development Bank. NP Governor had directed Jaffna ACLG to collect the said details in each Local Government area in Jaffna district and to submit a detailed report along with the data collected.
