Three youths were wounded in Gurunagar, a suburb of Jaffna town, at around 8.00 p.m. last night, when a grenade lobbed by the SLA in the area exploded, said sources.
The wounded were identified as Atputhan Callista,14, Atputhan Jeyakumar,24, and Anthony Madhutheeen Reggie,24, of Rajasingham Road in Thirunagar, a division of Gurunagar. Residents in the area said that Sri Lankan Army personnel stationed at the camp near the beach, less than 400 yards from Thirunagar, were in the habit of coming into the area everyday after dusk and roughing up civilians on the road. The army in Jaffna, meanwhile, denied the reports, saying that there was an explosion in the area and that troops during a search afterwards had found the three wounded youth and taken them to hospital.
