JVP to launch campaign against constitutional amendment

The Sinhala Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has decided to launch a campaign from September 8 on the day the United Peoples Freedom Alliance government led by Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapakse presents the constitutional amendment bill that removes the two term executive presidency system and modifying the Constitutional Council system into a five member advisory council.

JVP general secretary Tilvin Silva Monday at a meeting held in Colombo urged the people to take to the streets and wage a war to stop the government from implementing a draconian legislation. The people of this country did not have time to lose as the government had reached a decisive stage, he stressed.

He added that the government is bringing the constitutional amendment to avoid opposition to it from a group of ruling party parliamentarians. The government parliamentarians have started digging their own graves by the supporting the draconian constitutional amendment.
