An accused man sentenced to death for killing his son jumped down from the upper floor of Jaffna High Court in an attempt to escape when he was handcuffed and led to Jaffna prison by guards Wednesday. The seriously injured man is admitted to Jaffna Teaching Hospital, sources in Jaffna said. The death sentence was passed after four years of trials of the case in the courts in Jaffna.
Rasakumar Rajakumar, the man sentenced to death, had beaten to death his son Rajakumar Rajkumar in Puloali in Point Pedro area in 2003. The man had also caused serious injuries to his wife beating her too. Jaffna High Court has been expediting many longtime pending cases in recent times. However, numerous Habeas corpus applications filed by family members of persons gone missing after arrest by Sri Lanka Army and police in 1996 and 1997 still remain unattended in Jaffna High Court, the sources added.
