[TamilNet, Tuesday, 07 September 2010, 09:18 GMT]
Majority of parliamentarians of the main opposition United National
Party (UNP) Tuesday afternoon entered the parliament clad in black as
a mark of protest in opposition to the 18th amendment to the
constitution. One dissident parliamentarian of the UNP Abdul Cader of
Kandy district was present in the house in his usual attire and not in
black.
Meanwhile a group of lawyers paraded a coffin around the Supreme Court
complex in Colombo Tuesday noon as a mark of protest to the
introduction of the 18th amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka. The UNP Tuesday categorically stated that the party has determined to
expel all dissident MPs who vote for the constitutional amendment on
Wednesday in parliament. The
disciplinary action against the dissidents would commence immediately
and their membership would be cancelled, the UNP has said.
