The Liberation Tigers are preparing to observe Maveerar Week in big way this time in all the areas which under their control in the Batticaloa district, said sources in Kokkaddicholai today.
The main events will be in the large Paduvankarai region west of the Batticaloa lagoon, they said. Decorations have been put up from Porathivu junction to Karadaiyanar - a stretch of more than thirty miles. An LTTE spokesman in Palukamam said that the organisation's cultural unit will stage a street play in all the main villages under their control from Monday until the conclusion of the Maveerar week. The street play is called 'Tholvi Nichchayam' (defeat assured) - an obvious reference to SLA's Operation 'Jayasikurui', which means victory assured. The culmination of the week will be at Thandiady where the LTTE has a memorial and burial ground for its members killed in action. The Maveerar day speech of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhaharan will be broadcast at this memorial on the appointed hour, said the LTTE spokesman. The Sri Lankan Army and Special Task Force are on the look out, meanwhile, for LTTE posters and plantain tree and coconut frond decorations in areas controlled by them during the week.
