Ban, Rajapakse collusion undermining UN action on Sri Lanka?

[TamilNet, Sunday, 03 October 2010, 02:14 GMT]
Controversy surrounding United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon's meeting with Sri Lanka's President Rajapakse was fueled further as the UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky dodged questions from Inner City Press on the veracity of Rajapakse's statement that Moon has said that "UN panel was in no way empowered to investigate charges against Sri Lanka.” “It's up to individual heads of state” to issue whatever summaries they want, Spokesman Martin Nesirky was quoted as saying.

After promising to provide information on Rajapakse's contacts with UN Secretary General (UNSG) before and after Moon's appointment, Nersirky had reportedly told ICP Friday that he didn't understand the question, asking "[a] list of meetings?"

Ban's advisor, Nicholas Haysom, has previously characterized the statements from Ban and Rajapakse as "abnormal."

On the question of Ban's son in law Siddarth Chatterjee's involvement in Sri Lanka, with the Indian army force, Nesirky deemed it “irrelevant” two weeks after saying he would answer it, ICP said.

There were reported questions on conflict of interest of Ban Ki Moon related to Sri Lanka. Ban's son in law, Siddarth Chatterjee served in the Indian Peace Keeping force in Sri Lanka while serving as an Indian Army officer. ICP said earlier that it is waiting confirmation on this matter from Nesirky.
