Swindler from South arrested in Jaffna

A person from southern Sri Lanka who tried to cheat the war-affected women in Changkaanai in Valikaamam Jaffna was caught by local government officers and handed over to Maanippaay police. He had announced in the local media that he would help to get compensation money from Sri Lanka government and that the applicants should pay an amount of money for registration. He was caught when he was about to organize a meeting for the registration of applicants in Changkaanai. The person is detained in Maanippay police station for interrogation.

Earlier, a computer firm from Colombo which had opened an office in Jaffna had swindled millions of rupees from students saying that it would help them to get student visas to London and some other countries.

Sri Lanka minister Douglas Devananda and Jaffna High Court Judge, T. Vicknarajah had participated in the opening ceremony of the computer firm office in Jaffna, sources in Jaffna said.

The General Manager of the above firm was arrested and now held in Jaffna prison.

Jaffna peninsula, after the opening of A9 road, is invaded by many similar persons from the South who are engaged in swindling the people of Jaffna peninsula posing as persons connected to powerful government politicians and officials. These men are also operating in the war-ravaged Vanni and people have been asked to be extra cautious in dealing with such men, sources in Jaffna said.
