Highways 'development' projects with Chinese aid in North to be inaugurated

Sri Lankan government has announced that inauguration ceremonies are to be held Sunday and Monday in the North where foundation stones for various road development projects will be laid by a group of Sri Lanka ministers and deputy ministers including Basil Rajapaksa, Douglas Devananda and Namal Rajapaksa. Three Chinese firms have taken charge of the highway development projects and their engineers and technicians have already arrived in Jaffna and the work in the projects is to be done exclusively by Chinese work force, sources in Jaffna said.

The inauguration ceremonies are to take place in Mullaiththeevu, Mu’l’liyava’lai, Odduchuddaan, Ki’linochchi and in Puththoor Chanthi in Jaffna peninsula where the road development work is to be carried out as renovation projects.

The following development projects are to be inaugurated:

Jaffna-Kandy road 153 km, Jaffna-Palaali road 18 km, Jaffna-Point Pedro road 20 km, Puththoor-Meesaalai road 32 km, Jaffna-Kaangkeasanthu’rai road 16 km.

Similar development work is to be initiated on Mulliaththeevu-Kokki’laay-Pulmoaddai road 42.4 km and Odduchuddaan-Nedungkea’ni-Mullaiththeevu-Pu’liyangku’lam road 52.6 km.

China Railway No. 5 Engineering Group, China Aero Technological Engineering Group and China Hydro Corporation and the three Chinese companies that have undertaken the road development work in the North.
