SL Election Department rejects applications of 86 political parties for registration

Applications of eighty six political parties seeking registration from the Department of Elections have been rejected, according to the officials of the department. The rejected political parties included the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) led by Sarath Fonseka and the Tamil National Liberation Alliance led by M.K. Sivajilingam.

The reason for the rejection of new political parties was due to the failure to forward their applications with audited accounts, according to the department officials.

Not a single party has fulfilled the necessary requirements for registration laid down by the SL Commissioner of Election, the officials said.
