Kẹṭiya is a component often noticed in Sinhala place names. Usage examples show that in toponymy the term has two related shades of meanings. In a place name like Mẹda-kẹṭiya, the term means a part or block, and in a place name like Pupula-kẹṭiya the term may mean a part/ block as well as a collection, multitude or assemblage. See related place names for a number of usage examples. In Sinhala dictionary entries Kẹṭi means a collection, assemblage, heap, multitude etc. In these meanings, and in meaning a part or block, Kẹṭi corresponds to Kaṭṭi in Sinhala, which has both the shades of meanings. Kaṭṭi/ Kaṭṭiya also comes as a component in some Sinhala and Eezham Tamil place names. There are also the other variations, Kaṭuva, Keṭuva, Kẹṭē and Kẹṭẹlla. Kaṭuva means a collection, when comes as a suffix in Sinhala place names involving trees or plants. Kaṭu has different meanings in other contexts. All the said terms ultimately correspond to Kaṭṭu, which has various usage shades of meanings almost identical in Tamil and Sinhala, including the meanings said above. Kaṭṭu is listed as a word of Dravidian etymology (DED 1147). The verb of the word, as seen in Tamil, means to tie, bind, put together, build etc., corresponding to which the various shades of meanings have come. See boxes above, and columns 30, 31, 33 and 228 for Kaṭṭu-related place names in Tamil and Sinhala. The term Kẹṭa, when found used in Sinhala place names, has meanings related to Kaṭṭu discussed above (DED 1147), as well as other meanings coming from different etyma. Sorata notes Vẹṭa (enclosure) as one of the meanings of Kẹṭa, which corresponds to one of the usages of Kaṭṭu/ Kaṭṭai in Eezham Tamil place names (see columns 30 and 33) In meaning a pebble, lump etc., Kẹṭa shares meanings with Kaṭṭi in Tamil, corresponding to another verb Kaṭṭu meaning to harden (DED 1148). See column 365 for etymological discussion on the various meanings of Kẹṭa. Boraḷu meaning pebble, gravel etc. in Sinhala finds the cognates Paral and Paraḷ in Tamil, Kannada and other Dravidian languages (DED 3959). Pupula is the Sinhala name of a common creeping plant, Vernonia zeylanica, found in the island. Other Sinhala names given by Sorata for this plant are Kuppala and Koḍivẹl. Kuppuḻai and Kuppuḻāi are the names found in Eezham Tamil usage for this plant. Koṭivēli in Tamil is the name of a related species, Plumbago zeylanica. The etymology of Pupula/ Kuppala may be related to the spark-like flower bunches of the plant or to the abundantly growing attribute of the plant. See box for etymological possibilities in either way. Tiṁbiri has cognates both in Dravidian and Indo-Aryan. The closest cognates in Dravidian are found in Kannada (DED 3329).
