Tamils ignored in Administrative Service examinations

Tamils are ignored in the Sri Lanka Administrative Service (SLAS) competitive examination conducted by the Sri Lanka’s Department of Education. Not a single Tamil public servant has been selected from the SLAS competitive examination conducted in 2010, sources in the Department of Education said. Applications were called in for the said examination in 2009. More than thousand Tamils sat for the examination held in Colombo and Jaffna.

Those selected in the SLAS competitive examination are being appointed to senior posts in government sector. But Tamil candidates sat for the examination say that they have not received their official results from the Department of Examination. Tamil candidates have brought matter to the notice of the Department of Examination, Public Administration Ministry and to parliamentarians.

Sinhalese public servants are appointed administrative officers and to the senior level posts in public service. Only one or two Tamils are given such positions in the public service. The future public service would be in the hands of Sinhalese if this trend continues, observers said.

Batticaloa district Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian Mr.P.Selvarasa has brought the injustice to the notice to the Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister Mr. John Seneviratne.
