Food supplies may resume today

The officials responsible for co-ordinating essential supplies to the Vanni district will try to send the backlog in the supply of kerosene to the area before June 15, said sources.

Officials said that at least 293 lorry loads of essential food and kerosene have not been delivered for the months of March, April and May.

A meeting of senior officials was held at the Vavuniya Kachcheri on Friday to discuss the ways and means to increase the speed of supplies to the Vanni, said sources.

The meeting was presided by K.Ganesh, Government Agent, Vavuniya.

It was decided to increase the number of lorries to 30 a day from today, June 7 said sources.

The co-ordinators of various sections such as medical, school requirements, relief supplies, essential foodstuff met with UNICEF officials, Co-operative societies.

Transport contractors and convoy co-ordinators were asked to take every effort to send the lorries to the cross loading point at Uylankulam junction 7 miles south of Mannar town along the Mannar - Vavuniya trunk road before 8 a.m.

K.Ganesh who is also the co-ordinator for supplies to the Vanni instructed the transport contractors and convoy co-ordinators to give priority to sending the backlog of essential food items.

Supplies into the Vanni areas not held by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) are subject to severe delays due to the economic embargo in place on the region.
