Protest over woman's killing

A human rights group in Batticaloa has appealed to the Defense Ministry Secretary and the Anti-Harassment Committee appointed by the President, to take immediate steps to remove the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camps from populated areas in the district.

The Secretary of the organisation called 'Protect Human Rights Batticaloa' in a letter to the Secretary of the Anti-Harassment Committee and the Defense Secretary sent today has cited the incident, took place on Sunday at Murakoddanchchenai where a Tamil young woman Kandiah Vigneswary had been killed due to indiscriminate firing by an army captain.

"On the day of incident an army captain was testing new weapons received by his camp. He did not think of the villagers living near the camp. Our organisation vehemently condemns the irresponsible act of the army captain," the letter said.

"All those responsible in this crime should be dealt with severely. Action should be taken by the authorities concerned not to repeat this type of incident" said Mr. Kanaha Namanathan, Secretary of the" Protect Human Rights Batticaloa"in his letter.
