Casualties mount in fresh fighting

According to the latest reports, at least 30 Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were killed and 187 wounded when government troops tried to advance towards Vidathaltheevu, through Nayaatruveli, north of Paappamoddai.
SLA sources said that 40 Liberation Tigers, were killed and several others were wounded in the fighting today. They said that an area of 55 sq.km has been captured from the LTTE during this operation. Meanwhile unconfirmed reports from Mannar said that the bodies of 9 persons, believed to have been killed in the fighting today, were lying at the Uyilankulam SLA checkpoint. The bodies are to be taken to the Mannar hospital, according to the sources. The fighting has eased this evening, said the sources.
