Colombo exerts political influence on government employments in East

Unemployed Tamil graduates in the Batticaloa district are being forced by the Colombo government through its colonial agents in the Eastern Province to join SL President Mahinda Rajapaksa's Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the main constituent of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA), to get job opportunities in the government sector. 2,800 unemployed graduates attended the interview examinations held at district secretariat last week.

The Colombo government has been holding interviews promising government employment only during election periods, each time, ahead of SL parliamentary, presidential, provincial and civic elections. The latest drive is reported ahead of the elections to Eastern Provincial Council expected to be held in September this year.

The Batticaloa District Government Agent Ms P.M. Charles had earlier said that the unemployed graduates would be prioritized based on the year they passed out when considering appointment.

However the Kalkuda organizer of the SLFP Mr Chandrapala has been telling in pubic meetings that those who joined the SLFP would be appointed as teachers.

Warning legal actions, the Tamil National Alliance parliamentarians in the East have told the SL authorities at the district level to give priority to graduates who have passed out between 2004 and 2009.
