Eight men were arrested by the Police in a cordoned off search operation conducted early morning Monday, July 12, at Veppankulam refugee camp about 3 km north of Vavuniya along Mannar road, said sources.
Of the three outsiders who were arrested, two had come to see their wives staying in the camp, while the other had come to visit his relatives, sources said. Another man, who was found in possession of a set of uniforms of the security forces and a pair of boots, was also arrested by the Police, sources added. Police along with the Counter Subversive Unit (CSU) conducted the raid in the early hours of the morning. People were woken up from their beds and asked to gather at the open space of the camp while the Police first searched the belongings of the camp residents. Later the Police checked the Passes issued to them to identify the outsiders staying in the camp. The arrested are being detained at the CSU in Vavuniya, sources said.
