Batticaloa students demonstrate against police arrests

Students at the Eastern University have been boycotting lectures and demonstrating on the roads since 7 a.m. this morning in protest against the arrests of two follow students by the Police, sources said.
All traffic on the Batticaloa-Valaichenai road has been disrupted due to the students' demonstration, sources added. The Police arrested, Nagarajah Koneswaran, a student at the Agriculture Faculty on Tuesday, July 13, while Thangarajah Nadanasabesan of the Arts Faculty was arrested at his residence yesterday. A student representative said that they would continue the protests until the two are released. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Thangarajah, and the Registrar of the University, A.Harris, are holding discussions with student leaders, sources added. Meanwhile employees of the public transport service stopped work this morning after students stoned a bus.
