Vavuniya teachers on strike

Over 1500 teachers and principals in the Vavuniya district boycotted schools today in support of the 9 demands put forward by the Ceylon Tamil Teacher's Union (CTTU), said sources at the Education Department.

The teachers remained at homes after sending sick notes to the department, the sources added.

As a result over 37,000 students in the district did not have any classes today. Many of the students went to school and then returned home, as there were no teachers to conduct the school.

Officials at the 'People's Transport Board' in Vavuniya said that special buses were arranged for the children to return home.
