Buddhist Union opposes devolution

The Sri Lankan government should not implement any power sharing before wiping out terrorism in the country, said the Union of Buddhist organisations at a meeting yesterday. The union decided to campaign to bring pressure on the Sri Lankan government to prosecute the war, say sources.

A meeting of the Union, led by Bhikku Hon. Alutagama Dhammanantha, was held yesterday in the hill country.

A point of discussion was the ruling People' Alliance's to submit it's controversial devolution prposals to Parliament on August 19, the sources said.

The Union decided to demand from Sri Lanka President Chandrika Kumaratunge that she not proceed with any steps nor provide any promises regarding power sharing to the Tamils until the problem of terrorism is solved.

In the meantime, the Sinhala Veeravithana organisation has put up posters condemning the murder of Dr. Neelan Thiruchelvam at the postbox junction in Nuwara Eliya.
