Mano Ganesan challenged in Jaffna, politician complains of threat

The SL Minister of so-called ‘National Dialogue’ Mano Ganesan, projecting himself as competing with Mangala Samaraweera in winning the hearts and minds of the Tamil diaspora [towards the Colombo-centric agenda promoted by certain foreign Establishments], has gone to the extent of threatening a Jaffna-based political activist this week. Mr Ganesan was visiting Jaffna this week on a propaganda campaign to promote the so-called ‘National Secretariat for Non-Governmental Organizations’ (NSNGO), also known as NGO Secretariat, which is trying to control the civil society, Community Based Organisations and local NGOs by creating ‘federations’ at district-level.
The STF commandos entered the house of Mathimukarajah smashing the doors and threatening him for speaking against the visiting SL Minister. When he complained about the incident to the SL Minister in a phone call, the response of the SL minister was along the same line as that of the STF attackers, Mr Vijayakanth told journalists in Jaffna. While Mano Ganesan was addressing a meeting at Thaavadi in Jaffna, Vijayakanth confronted him with a disturbing question. The question came at a time when Mano Ganesan was defending himself saying he was trying but was unable to secure the needed attention on the plight of Tamils from his partners in the Colombo government. Ganesan's deceptive motive was disturbed by the question from Vijayakanth, who asked why Mr Ganesan was reluctant to resign his post and demonstrate his objection if his concern about the lack of progress was genuine (Ganesan has a trade unionist background). Vijayakanth is the son of a former Secretary of TULF Jaffna Branch, Pon Mathimukarajah, who was assassinated in December 1998. Mr Ganesan has been criticised for seeking to restrict the independent coordination of CBOs, NGOs and the civil organisations through projecting SL State-controlled ‘coordination’.
