Army of Sinhala traders desecrate Ko'neasvaram temple in Trincomalee

More than 65 shops have been put up in the vicinity of Thiruk-koa'neasvaram temple by an army of invading Sinhala traders causing several problems to the physical and spiritual environment of the historic temple of Eezham Tamils, K. Arulsubramaniam, the chairman of temple trustees told TamilNet this week.

The trustees had a meeting with the SL Governor of East on 07 February, and the Governor gave specific instructions to discipline the conduct of the business occupiers.

But, there has been no action from the officials so far, Mr Arlusubramaniam further said.

The board of trustees has now sent an appeal to Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan, who hails from Trincomalee, to act before it is too late.

The environment surrounding the spiritual place is in a pathetic state due to the activities of the invading shop owners. Their actions pollute the temple environment with wastes, they harass the devotees and bring alcohol to the spiritual place, he further said.

The intruding traders were brought in by SL Deputy Minister Susantha Punchinilame who served prison terms for alleged murder in the past.
