Encroaching Sinhala monk receives official recognition from SL Archaeology Department

SL Archaeology Department officials have put up a stone and a notice board claiming a locality that has been encroached for some time by an extremist Sinhala Buddhist monk at Chemmalai East close to Naayaa'ru Bridge as an archaeological site on Friday 01 June 2018. The monk, claiming the establishment as Gurukanda has been collecting the belongings of uprooted Tamils and claiming these as heritage artefacts from an ancient Sinhala Buddhist settlement of his imagination. In fact, there was a Buddhist vihara in the past, and it didn't belong to Sinhala Theravada Buddhism, the officials said. The Sinhalicisation of the area aims at destroying the territorial contiguity of the North and the East, which is the traditional homeland of Eezham Tamils.



Now the SL Archaeology Department, working closely with the occupying SL military and the Buddhist Establishment in the South, has given ‘official’ status to the claim of the monk, Tamil civil officials at Karai-thu'raip-pattu division said.

In the past, there was a vihara in the area, and it has already been reconstructed.

But, the locality which is now being converted into an archaeological site according to the imagination of the monk was is not a vihara site from the past, the Tamil civil officials further said.

The Theravada Buddhist monks are Sinhalicising all the traces of ancient Tamil Buddhist sites in the North-East.

593 Brigade Headquarters of the 59 Division of the occupying SL Army is located at Naayaa'aru.

The occupying Sinhala military has also not allowed the uprooted Tamil people to resettle in the area.

The agricultural landowners have however managed to engage in cultivation.

Tamil fishers are also not allowed to use the coast by the intruding Sinhala fishermen who operate from Mukaththuvaaram.

In the meantime, the SL Mahaweli ‘Development’ Authority has also been targeting to seize the lands and convert them into a Sinhala colony in the long run through the so-called L Scheme, the officials further said.

Naayaa'ru Bridge is located on Mullaiththeevu - Kokku'laay Road.
