Colonists in Vavuniyaa North demand Sinhala-only sub-office

Sinhala civic councillors who represent the colonising settlers in Vavuniyaa North Civic Council are demanding a distinct Sinhala-only sub-office for the colonists in the civic council. It is a calculated move to create a new electoral divisional council for Sinhala colonisers, Tamil civil sources in Vavuniyaa North said. Already, there is a Sinhala Divisional Council and Tamil Divisional Council in Vavuniyaa South.



The eight Sinhala councillors have jointly come up with a demand on the third week of September to create a sub-office. They were arguing that the head office of Vavuniyaa North Divisional Council is located far away in Nedungkea'ni.

The eight of the twenty-six elected civic members in the civic Piratheasa Chapai (PS /Divisional Council) of Vavuniyaa North represent Sinhala-settlers, who have colonised four traditional villages of the division located on its eastern side.

Gajabapura (710 voters), Kalyanapura (431 voters), Ethawetunawewa (914 voters) and Nikawewa South (1,278 voters) constitute the Sinhalicised sector of Vavuniyaa North.

The sector is bordering with recently Sinhalicised Ma'nal-aa'ru (Weli-Oya) of Mullaiththeevu district in the northeast as well as bordering Sinhala colonies in Anuradhapura and Trincomalee in the south and south-east.
