New ID cards in Trincomalee

The Sri Lankan military authorities (SLA) have decided to issue a new identity card to all persons above the age of 12 years, residing in the Trincomalee district, sources said.

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) is distributing the necessary application forms to the people of the district through the police.

In the application form, it has been stated that the decision to issue new identity cards was taken following an appeal by peace committees in the district.

However, the President of the Ward No: 4 Peace Committee in the Trincomalee town, Mr. S. Sriskandarajah, in a letter to the SLA Officer concerned has objected to the peace committees being mentioned in connection with issuing of new identity card.

The decision to issue new identity card has been taken by the Army alone, and the Peace committees in the district never asked for it, said Mr. Sriskandarajah in his letter to the Army Officer concerned.

The SLA earlier issued similar identity card on two occasions.
