The Sri Lankan Police at the Colombo Magistrate's Court today recorded statements of opposition Parliamentarians Pramaratne Gunasekera, Gamini Lokuge, Mervyn Silva and Western provincial Councillor Almon Pieris pertaining to the July 15 demonstration organised by the United National Party (UNP) at Havelock Road.
Earlier Colombo Additional Magistrate Kanthie Wanigasekera issued notice on these UNP Parliamentarians and the Provincial Councillor to appear in Court, sequel to an application by the police. In their application, the Police had stated that a group of people including these four persons had staged a demonstration and went on a procession on July 15, 1999 without a valid police permit. The police in their report further stated that they obstructed the Narahenpita Police OIC Kasthuri Ratna, Wellawatte Police OIC Wickremaratne and the Bambalapitiya Police OIC Haris Chandra from discharging their duties. The Court ordered the Police to submit a report on the progress of the investigations on January 5.
