Mannar GA released

The Supreme Court today ordered the immediate release of Mannar Government Agent (GA) Mr. Saveriyan Mariathasan Cruz. He was arrested on September 4.

Earlier the GA had filed a fundamental rights application challenging his detention through his counsel Mrs. Gowry Shankary Thavarasa.

When the application was taken up for hearing, State Counsel Palitha Ranasinghe submitted that the Attorney General had instructed the Police to release the detainee.

The application stated that the GA had not committed any offences and had only performed official duties. Therefore, his arrest and detention was unreasonable and wrongful.

The bench comprised of Chief Justice Sarath Silva, Justice Priyantha Perera and Justice Weerasekara.

S. Mahendren and Saliya Peiris instructed by Mrs. Thavarasa appeared for the applicant.
