AG files indictment against Vavuniya Red Cross official

The Sri Lankan Attorney General filed an indictment against the Vavuniya Red Cross Society (SLRC) Co-ordinating Secretary Sivananthan Kishore Under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, State Counsel S.Hardy told Supreme Court today.

At the same time, a fundamental rights application filed by Kishore through his Counsel Gowry Shankari Thavarasa came up for hearing before the Supreme Court.

This application challenged the legality of the arrest and detention of Kishore since April, 1999.

Attorney at law P. Sivaloganathan, senior Counsel for the petitioner indicated to Court that Kishore wanted to proceed with the hearing of the petition.

Mr. Sivaloganathan argued that there was no justification to charge since there was no material on which the he could be charged.

The Bench comprised Chief Justice Sarath Silva and Justice Theeraratne.
