CWC to protest UNP appointment
[TamilNet, Thursday, 20 January 2000, 20:22 GMT]
Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) is expected to protest to the United National Party over the appointment of a UNP member to the Parliamentary seat that has become vacant following the death of CWC leader and minister Saumyamoorthy Thondaman.
CWE sources indicated that this was a violation of a 1994 agreement between the UNP and the late Mr. Thondaman. The sources explained that under the 1994 agreement the UNP accepted that two of their National list seats would be reserved for the CWC. The United National Party (UNP) appointed Mr. V.Puthirasikamani as Member of Parliament, to fill the vacancy created by the death of Mr. S.Thondaman. He was sworn in the Parliament yesterday. This has resulted in one seat less for the Ceylon Workers' Congress in the parliament.
