Sentries shoot hospital escapee

The sentries at the Batticaloa military intelligence camp shot and grievously wounded a mentally disturbed youth who had tried escape from the Batticaloa hospital last night around 8.30 p.m.

The youth, identified as Anthonypillai Sasikaran 20, succumbed to his wounds this morning. He had been admitted for attempting to commit suicide two days earlier.

The military intelligence camp is located behind the Batticaloa general hospital to its immediate right on the edge of the lagoon.

The sentries had shot the youth in panic as soon as they had seen him jumping over the rear wall of the hospital.
