Court discharges widowed-mother

Meenambigai Manikampillai, a 45 year old widow and a mother of 5 children, who was arrested at Puttalam and detained by the police, was discharged by the Chilaw Magistrate, said legal sources in Chilaw.

Attorney at Law Mrs.Gowry Shankary Thavarasa had earlier filed a fundamental rights application on behalf of detainee in the Supreme Court.

Ms. Thavarasa submitted that the suspect was arrested on 23rd August 1999 at her residence in Puttalam. According to her affidavit she had not been involved in any terrorist activity.

State Counsel Palitha Ranasinghe told the Court that the prosecution did not intend to proceed with the case.

The Bench comprised Justice Dr.Amerasinghe, Justice Priyantha Perera and Justice Ameer Ismail.
