Complaint to World Bank on distortions in texts

The recommendations submitted by the Ceylon Tamil Teachers Union (CTTU) to the Education Publications Department to eliminate distortion of facts from the Tamil medium textbooks to be printed and published next year, have been completely rejected by the authorities. A World Bank team was informed of this by a delegation of the CTTU on Wednesday.

The World Bank team is in Colombo assessing the progress of the new education reforms, now being implemented in the country with the financial aid from the Bank.

The CTTU delegation brought to the notice of the World Bank team, led by Dr.Vincent Greany who heads the South Asia region, that the Tamil medium textbooks printed and distributed by the Education Publications Department for the Year 2000 contained more grammatical and spelling mistakes than those published in 1999.

The textbooks which are to be printed in the Year 2001 may contain less grammatical and spelling mistakes, but would certainly contain distortion of facts as the recommendations submitted by the CTTU in this regard had been totally rejected by the authorities concerned.

The World Bank team assured the CTTU delegation that it would look into the complaint.
