Plea to President: help find my husband

A mother of five children has appealed to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge to help her to trace her husband who was last seen by her when being questioned by some Sri Lanka Navy personnel on the morning of August 11.

Mrs Z.Kulusum BeeBee, a Muslim resident of Kachchunakal, Ward No: 01 of Nilaveli, eight miles north of Trincomalee sent a memorandum to the President Thursday, stating that at about 7 a.m. on 11.08.2000 she left her house with her husband and her children to go to her mother-in-law's house at Iqbal Nagar, about 2 km from her village. She traveled by bus. Her husband followed on his bicycle.

"As I was travelling in the bus, I noticed my husband was being held up at a point close to the 7th mile post on Nilaveli road by some navy personnel who were coming on foot patrol. I proceeded to Iqbal Nagar and waited for my husband. But he failed to turn up.

"Thereafter on the same day around 10 in the morning I went to 8th mile navy checkpoint and inquired about my husband. There I was told that no one was taken into custody.

"I personally saw my husband being inquired by the Navy personnel when I passed this spot by bus. Todate, my husband has not come back. I am not aware as what has happened to my husband. Please help me to trace my husband" states Kulusum Bee Bee in her appeal to the President.
