29 groups to contest in Trinco

The Assistant Commissioner of Elections Mr.Suntharam Arumainayagam Monday accepted nomination lists from seventeen political parties and six independent groups to contest the forthcoming general elections in the Trincomalee district.
The political parties are: People's Alliance, United National Party, Tamil United Liberation Front, Jathika Vimukthi Peramuna, Liberal Party, All Ceylon Tamil Congress, Eelam People Democratic Party. Tamil
Eelam Liberation Organization, Purvase Peramuna, Sinhalaye Mahasammatha Bhumiputhra Party, Sihala Urumaya, Muslim United Liberation Front, People's Freedom Front, Ruhunu Janatha Party ,National Development Front, Democratic United Liberation Front and Sri Lanka Muslim Kadchchi
There are six independent groups participating, with the following symbols: radio, padlock, sewing machine, telephone, boat and fish.
The Assistant Commissioner of Elections rejected the nomination list submitted by the 'Ilankai Thamilarasu Kadchchi' stating that nomination papers had not been signed by its General Secretary. Nomination papers of an independent group were rejected as they had not been submitted in time.
Meanwhile a group of United National Party supporters was attacked with stones at Varapaththansenai village in Ampara district Monday evening when they were returning to Akkaraipattu after submitting party's nominations at the District Secretariat.
Five civilians were wounded when some one started firing at them. One person later succumbed to gunshot injuries, hospital sources said.
Meanwhile in the Ampara electorate district 12 political parties and six independent groups have submitted their nominations to contest the forthcoming general elections. Minister and SLMC leader M.H.M.Ashraff is leading the People's Alliance candidates.
