President promises to consult Maha Sangha

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge has assured a group of Buddhist priests that in future she would consult the Maha Sangha before taking any decisions regarding important national problems.
She met a group of Buddhist clergy including Venerable Maditheeravela Vajira Thera, Anunayake of Sri Ramanya Nikaya Chapter at Temple Trees today. Buddhist priests discussed with the President the assistance they could provide to ensure a fair and free poll. She told them that her government is dedicated to safeguard democracy in Sri Lanka. She is prepared to ensure free and fair elections. She said that some sections of the Maha Sangha are against the government's policies because of few opportunist politicians. Ministers Lakshman Jayakody and S.B.Dissanayake were also present during the discussion.
