Police arrests Chandrasekaran, MP

Mr.Periyasamy Chandrasekaran, Leader of the Upcountry People's Front and a Member of Parliament for the Nuwara Eeliya district was arrested under the Emergency Regulations around 1.30 a.m. Monday. He was arrested at his home.

Mr.Chandrasekaran contested the last general election and won in the United National Party ticket. He was brought down to Colombo this morning by the C.I.D. officials for further interrogation.

Tension prevails in several parts of the hill country areas following the arrest of Mr.Chandrasekaran, sources said.

Meanwhile a hartal is being observed in the eastern town of Batticaloa to protest against the arrest of Mr.Chandrasekaran and condemning the massacre of Tamil detainees at Bindunuwewa detention centre.
