Town mourns as slain MP is buried

The funeral of slain TULF MP for Batticaloa, Nimalan Soundaranayagam took place at the Methodist burial ground in his native town of Morokkottaanchenai, in Batticaloa at 5 p.m. Friday.
 The funeral cortege carrying the remains of Soundaranayagam left Selvanayakam hall in Batticaloa around 10 a.m. where it had been kept since Thursday. The cortege arrived at Morokkottaanchenai around 4 p.m. His remains were laid to rest at 5 p.m. after final rites were conducted. A large number of people, including senior TULF officials and supporters attended the funeral, said sources in the eastern town. White flags were hoisted and streets were decorated as a mark of respect for the slain MP. Mr.Aslie Nimalan Soundaranayagam (50), was elected as a Member of Parliament of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) in the parliamentary elections held on 10 October. He was shot dead Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Kiran in the eastern province while he was travelling on a motor cycle with one of his party supporters.
