Tigers attack Thoppur police station

The Liberation Tigers attacked and overran the Police Station at Thoppur in the Mutur area, 25 km. south of Trincomalee around 5.30 Tuesday morning. Local residents said the Liberation Tigers remained in control of the police station, and removed arms and other military equipment from the Police station.

Tigers blew up the police station building and a near by bridge at Kalwankulam before withdrawing, security sources said.

Security sources said casualties were minimal as the policemen made a tactical withdrawal. A policeman, a soldiers and a civilian were wounded in the incident they said. They were admitted to the Mutur hospital. The Sri Lanka Army said four LTTE members were killed in the fighting.

Meanwhile the Police said they found a bomb near a check post at Puliyadi in Mutur around 11a.m. Tuesday. The bomb was diffused by army bomb disposal squad.
