Woman raped by STF soldier

A woman was raped by a Special Task Force (STF) elite soldier at Cheddipaalayam in the eastern Batticaloa on Monday police and hospital sources said. The victim, a mother of two, was admitted to Batticaloa hospital.

According to a complaint lodged with the police the soldier had also threatened her life if she complained to anyone about the crime. The woman had gone to collect fire-wood when she was raped by the STF trooper, according to the complaint.

The suspect, identified as Ranjith Hettiyarachi, attached to Cheddipaalayam STF camp was arrested by the police and produced before the Batticaloa District Judge who remanded him until 20 February.
