Arms recovered from Razeek group - LTTE

The Liberation Tigers announced in Batticaloa today that they recovered seven assault rifles including one NATO G-3 from the SLA's Razeek group in yesterday's ambush in the Thalavai-Punnaikudah, eight kilometers north of the Batticaloa town.

The Liberation Tigers attacked the Razeek group which had been waiting in ambush for them yesterday morning. Six Razeek group cadres were killed in this counter ambush.

The Thalavai - Punnaikudah area is becoming a regular scene of confrontation between this ex-Tamil militant group (of the EPRLF) and the Liberation Tigers who often cross the area.

Razeek was a senior member of the EPRLF and led an assassination unit under the IPKF known as the 'Mandayan' group. It is widely believed that Razeek is still very much part of the EPRLF.

The organisation, however, issues lame denials whenever the link comes in for public criticism.

Razeek group operates now under the supervision of the local unit of the Sri Lankan military draw salaries as full time soldiers of the Sri Lankan army.
