Vanni officials seen discriminated against
[TamilNet, Thursday, 01 January 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Government officers are compelled to work under severe constrains in the North, especially in the Vanni area, said sources in the Vanni. They charged that that senior government administrators such as government agents (GA), additional government agents (AGA) and grama sevakas (village level government employees) were subjected to pressures which government employees in other areas did not have to face.
They say that these officials did not have the authority to resettle displaced persons that they had earlier enjoyed. This has placed both the sick and the displaced in Vanni region in great difficulty. Tamil MPs have periodically accused the Government of exerting pressure on government employees in the North and using relief to displaced persons as a weapon in its war against the LTTE.
